Balance!

This week on Thursday I am giving a lesson in a Relief Society meeting on "Achieving Balance in our Lives." I have been thinking a lot about this lately....what does it take to to keep and maintain balance. The more I have pondered this, the more I am coming to understand, at least from my own experience, that the most important thing to having balance is where our priorities lie. I have discovered that we will never have real balance and harmony in our lives if we do not put the most important things first....daily prayer, daily scripture study being two of the most vital things to keep our lives in balance. Elder Ballard said in a book called "When thou art Converted" that if we are too busy to spend a few minutes everyday in scripture study then we are TOO busy and should find a way to eliminate or modify whatever activities are making that simple task impossible. So, I ask the question to those of you who read my blog...What are some things you do to keep your life in balance? I am interested as I prepare this lesson to see what others do to help maintain balance in their lives......

balance is not something I'm good at (esp when I'm pregnant and I use my tiredness as an excuse for everything), but when I AM feeling balanced in life it's because I have a schedule. (things like scripture study, time with the kids, project time, everything...well, except for bathroom trips :)...haha) have a specific time they happen. Right now, this is not the case, though! :(

Setting a schedule brings balance. A time to get up, a time to pray, a time to read scriptures, a time to exercise, a time to relax, a time to be happy and carefree. I have found that when there is order in my life there is calm. I also know that making plans and having something to look forward to has always helped with doing the hard stuff that we have to do.

I read a really awesome blog post about this very thing on Mormon Mommy Blogs (don't ask...) and it changed my perspective immensely. She said that Sister Beck gave a fireside where she answered a question about guilt--should we feel it? how much?--and how we as women feel like we should be all things to all people all of the time. It was extraordinary. I linked to it off of my blog.

In general? I think finding balance is an eternal quest. Literally. The more we involve the Lord, though, the less teeter-tottery it feels and the more it begins to feel like a balanced life. We may still be running around, may still never get all we need to have done done, but we are much more centered.

I feel like that made no sense at all, but there you go. But at least I did it while multitasking. ;)

I wish I knew! I struggle with balance in my life and would LOVE to come hear your lesson!

I tend to be a "giver" meaning that I give 100% to whatever I am dedicated to. Sometimes its Steven, sometimes its school, sometimes it work, sometimes its the kids I teach, sometimes its my relationship with the Lord. I have been told by many people that I am one of the most dedicated people that they know because I truly commit and dedicate all that I have to whatever needs to be done. The problem with this is that when 100% of myself and my dedication is going to the kids at school, there is none left for steven or myself!

One of the things that helped me in college was to write out a list of everything that needed my attention. And then figure out what was most important and then next important and then so on. That list changed from day to day. Sometimes homework was most important (well after spiritual things of course!) but some days it was most important that I take a nap or call my siblings or whatever.

I think that sometimes when we are too focused on the importance of one thing, we are unable to accomplish the other things that are needed. And I think that it is important that we recognize that importance can change day to day. We have to be willing to be flexible...with the exception of the things that we have been commanded to do...scriptures and prayer and church aren't debatable...they MUST be in our schedules!

And...remember that if we aren't happy...we can't help others as fully! So it is so important to have time for ourselves!!! (which in my life equates to a tanning bed and some ice cream and plane tickets home at least once a year! haha)

Hey Jean,
did you look up that talk I sent you a while back that a lady gave at BYU Women's conference. It has some wonderful thoughts on balance. I also wrote my thoughts on balance a while ago on my timeformo blog if you want to check that out. I'd write more, but Emma just whacked her head . . . she doesn't have great balance!
